In 1893, Canon Adam Gray Maitland arrived from Scotland to find a void in the Black Country: the absence of the "Royal and Ancient game."
Old Tom Morris—architect of Muirfield—personally designed the original course.
His layout takes full advantage of the volcanic ridge, offering a test of golf that remains as relevant today as it was in 1893.
